Behind The Door
Paper
2024
This is a wall-mounted “fridge door”. The door consists of four levels, separated by the original compartments. The artist used this support to reproduce the interior of a fridge door, with all the foodstuffs that might be found inside. The sconce features a double light source. One on the inside, to recreate the “fridge atmosphere”, and a second on the back to increase the visual impact of the work. The artist wanted to respect his style (mosaic, message) and add a more pop feel (lights) in keeping with the gallery's line. Through this work, the artist wanted to deal with two conservation issues. The first is that of preservatives, which are very present in our food. As their name suggests, they are used to preserve foodstuffs and cosmetics and extend their shelf life. They can also have an impact on our health. The second angle is that of human preservation. Depending on the light projected onto the work, a human skull appears, a symbol often found in vanitas, allegorical representations of the fragility of human life.
